It is, I contend, about exploration, discovery, unrepeatable experiences and priceless enrichment \u2013 by ship.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, we\u2019re seeing new players in the sector, many of whom are bringing their brand credentials along and expanding the \u2018pie\u2019, so to speak, and creating thousands of new converts to expedition cruising.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Silversea Cruises<\/strong>, for one, has developed Asia-Pacific into its second largest expedition market. The luxury line now has three adventurous Silvers sailing the world in the form of Explorer, Discoverer and Galapagos, bringing their own special incarnation of \u2018champagne\u2019 expedition cruising to Australians and indeed the world.<\/p>\n<p>Homegrown brand,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>APT<\/strong>, have charged headlong into this sector too thanks to a very canny merger with top-rated UK operation<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Noble Caledonia<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that introduced the Berlitz 4.5 star rated<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Caledonian Sky<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>to Australian adventurers.<\/p>\n<p>The stalwart, double-barrelled<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Lindblad Expeditions \u2013 National Geographic<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>brand is now taking on this lofty sector with the acquisition of the Orion, a magnificent and eminently capable ship many believe to be the best in class. It\u2019s been a marriage that many observers, including myself, have watched very closely as the pioneering family company (who can trace their expedition cruising heritage back to 1966) subsume a ship quite different to the other five, more utilitarian, vessels in the NG fleet.<\/p>\n<p>The newly \u2018Linbladised\u2019 NG Orion\u2019s new suite of \u201ctools for exploration\u201d includes a comprehensive scuba facility, greatly expanded photo and video workshops, a remote-controlled underwater submarine, brand new kayaks and a high resolution camera for stunning underwater images. Would you like caviar with that?<\/p>\n<p>American newcomer (to the AU market) and frequent name-changer are<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Un-Cruise<\/strong>, having been once American Safari Cruises and InnerSea Discoveries. Seattle-based, small ship entrepreneur, Dan Blanchard, has collected most of the former Cruise West vessels and itineraries and turned them into Safaris and Wildernesses. The big little line now offers six cruising regions on eight vessels, most of which are unknown to Australian expedition cruisers.<\/p>\n<p>The more traditionalist (some might say \u2018purist\u2019)<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>One Ocean Expeditions<\/strong>, are renewing the search for Sir John Franklin in the Canadian Arctic (<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151220192546\/http:\/\/www.expeditioncruising.com\/2014\/09\/sir-john-franklins-lost-ship-found-in.html\">since found<\/a>) with the sturdy ex-Soviet<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Akademik Sergey Vavilov<\/em>. The MH370 of its day, Franklin, 126 men and two complete ships have been missing 160-odd years. Good luck chaps.<\/p>\n<p>Out on the rivers (yes, expedition cruising happens there too) the burgeoning<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Pandaw<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>fleet continues to expand despite the mysterious disappearance of the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Saigon Pandaw<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>last Christmas. Pandaw have added a new mid-size vessels like<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Katha<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Angkor<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(32 pax), as well as a boutique-sized boats like<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Kaladan<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><em>Kha Byoo<\/em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(20 pax) to bring their fleet of gorgeous heritage vessels up to 12.<\/p>\n<p>And they are not alone on the rivers, because breathing down their neck are<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Aqua Expeditions<\/strong>,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Travel Indochina<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>(<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20151220192546\/http:\/\/traveloscopy.blogspot.com\/2015\/02\/travel-indochina-to-become-insider.html\">now<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Insider Journeys<\/b><\/a>) and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><strong>Heritage Line<\/strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>with their own new builds.
